About JW Greaves & Sons Ltd.
J W Greaves & Sons Ltd is a truly historic company, established in the 1830s to mine for slate in North West Wales. The founder, John Whitehead Greaves discovered the ‘Old Vein’ of slate which was exported all over the world. Incorporated in 1901 it is one of the oldest continuously operating companies in Wales.
The business diversified into tourism in the 1970s and the current management team has, in the last fifteen years, diversified further into energy, hospitality, film location services and food storage turning around significant losses - and protecting employment in one of the most deprived parts of Britain.
J W Greaves now combines trading and landlord activities in a profitable grouping of business units all based on a beautiful site in the midst of Eryri (Snowdonia).
Accommodation
The accommodation business consists of three elements trading as Plas Weunydd Hotel, Llechwedd Glamping and Barlwyd Glamping.
Plas Weunydd Hotel
Plas Weunydd Hotel was created from a fine Victorian building originally built as a home for the Greaves family. This was converted into a 24 bedroom family hotel and is currently subject to a pre-planning application for an 8 bedroom extension. The Hotel is marketed as a ‘Base for Adventure’ providing comfortable accommodation and hearty Welsh food for adventurers of every sort.Llechwedd Glamping
The glamping site is set on a hillside overlooking an old quarry, the Zip Lines and the beautiful Vale of Ffestiniog. Based on safari tent style, but with insulated walls, lambswool ceilings integral bathroom and cooking facilities, each unit sleeps 4 or 5 people and is ideal for families. There is currently a pre-planning application with Cyngor Gwynedd to expand this popular site.
Barlwyd Glamping
Barlwyd Glamping is set in one of the most amazing locations on the estate. Set high up on the Moorland, Barlwyd comprises five off-grid Shepherd’s Huts with exclusive interior design creating spaces ideal for adventurous couples. Guests have access to a wood fired ‘sauna with a view’, a dark-sky environment and each hut has its own all-terrain buggy to transport visitors from the car park to their hut.
Gardd Glamping
A pre-planning application is currently being developed for a 10 unit wellness glamping offer to the rear of the Hotel which will also provide ‘spa’ type services to Hotel Guests.
TRADING
The trading businesses are led by the Company’s Commercial Director Bleddyn Williams and include a diverse range of enterprises.
Green Energy
Hydro Electric
The Hydro Electric business originated in the Edwardian period and was renovated and returned to use by the current management team.
There are two power stations: Maenofferen which generates 580,000 Kwh per annum and Pant-yr-afon which generates 1,850,000 Kwh per annum. Electricity is currently sold into the grid, and part of the production from the Maenofferen Power Station will be sold via a local energy network for use in a heating project - itself addressing a serious issue of local fuel poverty.
Film Locations and Corporate Events
The wild and varied landscape – from rugged mining landscape to rolling moorland – provides an amazing backdrop for a wide range of TV and feature film productions. Add in atmospheric ruins and semi-restored Victorian Industrial Mills and it becomes clear why Llechwedd has been used so often for everything from the Witcher to LandRover.
The site with its combination of landscape, adventure attractions and comfortable accommodation also makes a great location for corporate events and product launches recently hosting Volvo, Burberry and Garnier amongst others.
Cheese Storage
The company stores premium cheddar in a secure and specially adapted underground Cavern for Snowdonia Cheese Company. The delicious cavern matured ‘Rock Star’ cheddar is available across the world with outlets in the USA, Australia and across Europe.
