Porthmadog | Explore the harbour town of Porthmadog. Stroll the high street filled with shops, restaurants, cafes and lovely pubs. Have a look at the historic steam railway. Not far from Porthmadog you'll also find the coastal town of Borth y Gest where you can go for a stunning beach walk.

Criccieth Castle | A historic castle perched on the headland between two beaches. Don't miss Y Maes, a lively food hall with indoor and outdoor seating serving local food & drinks. Criccieth has lots of antique shops, great ice cream, and lovely restaurants. You'll also find a sauna with sea & castle views just next to the lovely Dylans restaurant.
Ffestiniog Railway | Hop on one of the world’s oldest narrow-gauge steam railways and enjoy a scenic ride through Eryri Snowdonia’s stunning landscapes. With multiple routes including Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. Dogs are also welcome on the train!
top 6 Dog-Friendly beaches Near Plas Weunydd
Although our hotel and glamping site is located in the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), you can experience the coast easily. During your stay, we highly recommend visiting some of our favourite dog-friendly beaches under an hour's drive away. You can double check any dog restrictions on the council website.
Traeth Carreg Wen (Carreg Wen Beach)
A quiet, sandy beach in Bae Tremadog (Tremadog Bay) with beautiful views across the estuary to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).
Dog rules: Dog friendly all year round
Good to know: Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents. The nearest parking is a 20 minute walk away in Borth-y-Gest.
Traeth Morfa Bychan (Black Rock Sands)
An expansive two mile stretch of sandy beach with mountain views. You can drive onto the beach which makes it accessible for those with mobility issues.
Dog rules: Dogs are restricted on one side of the beach during the summer from 1st April to 30th September.
Good to know: The beach is backed by a dune system which has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A river mouth lies at the south-eastern end of the beach, and the village of Morfa Bychan is a few hundred meters away.
Traeth Cricieth (Criccieth Beach)
A crescent shaped beach of sand and stones that is nicely sheltered by a rocky headland and Criccieth Castle, a 13th century castle.
Dog rules: There is a seasonal summer ban on the main stretch, but you will find a dedicated dog friendly area all year round at the eastern end, just past the car park.
Good to know: A promenade runs along the back of the beach, providing great, level access points. The town of Criccieth has lovely restaurants, ice cream, pubs, and shopping.
Traeth Harlech (Harlech Beach)
A four mile stretch of soft golden sand backed by grassy sand dunes. With stunning views of Eryri (Snowdonia) mountains and Harlech Castle sitting just behind it.
Dog rules: A small section immediately in front of the holiday park has a dog ban between 1st April and 30th September. The rest of the beach is dog friendly all year round.
Good to know: Swimming in the clear waters is generally safe. To access the beach, there is a 400 metre path from the pay-and-display car park that takes you through the sand dunes. Harlech town is worth exploring, with lovely food options, gift shops, and the castle cafe has views not to be missed.
Traeth Llandanwg (Llandanwg Beach)
Soft sand and rock pools backed by dunes that hide a tiny 13th century church, offering views of the rugged Y Rhinogydd (Rhinog Mountains).
Dog rules: Dogs are restricted on the southern third of the beach during the summer, but the remaining sand is dog friendly all year.
Good to know: Llandanwg Beach is well-shielded from the winds. Fisherman come here for bass, mackerel, flatfish, and dogfish. It’s located between Harlech and Barmouth.
Traeth Mochras (Shell Island Beach)
A remote feeling peninsula famous for a huge variety of seashells, featuring brilliant views across Bae Ceredigion (Cardigan Bay) to Eryri (Snowdonia).
Dog rules: Dogs must be kept on leads in the main beach area. However, there is a specific spot past the last safety sign, below the big sand dune, where they are allowed off lead for a good run.
Good to know: You can only reach the beach via a tidal causeway across the river estuary at low tide.
